PNG’s Milne Bay Eyeing Long-Stay Tourists Who Spend More Money
17 January 2018To prepare for the next “Seatrade Cruise Global” cruise show in early March , in the United States, Tahiti Tourism Minister Nicole Bouteau invited, to the Port Autonome, more than twenty representatives of the sector, members of Tahiti Cruise Club, communities or partner organizations, including the CCISM and Tahiti Tourisme, but also representatives of the ship Paul Gauguin.
Each of them is indeed likely to go to the Seatrade. The challenge is to create a coherent and united delegation to go to this World Cruise Fair and thus be able to exchange with the cruise ship owners on the opportunities and the operational evolution of the destination.
This year 2018 is one of the best years of cruise activity for almost ten years for Tahiti and its islands, with a record number of stopovers scheduled throughout Polynesia, a total of 1057 ship affected in our islands, with vessels of less than 100 to more than 2500 passengers.
In addition, the policy of diversification and multiplication of the “heads of line” (complete rotation of passengers in Papeete) continues to bear fruit, with ever more companies, alongside Paul Gauguin (who will celebrate his 20 years of operations this year), Wind Spirit or Aranui. Océania, Ponant, Holland America Line and Regent Seven Seas cruises choose Tahiti for complete itineraries.

After a presentation by the Ministry of Tourism, around the state of play and the perspectives of the sector, Nicole Bouteau invited the actors to share and to discuss on the objectives of growth of the destination, which collectively engage the whole of the a sector around common issues, whether it is in terms of developing excursion possibilities taking into account the international standards of the cruise, or for example the relational issues with each company in order to increase the number of stopovers in the Polynesian islands. She said that the upcoming exchanges are a continuation of previous actions, including meetings last November at the headquarters of various US companies she personally conducted with Tahiti Tourism,
The Managing Director of the Papeete Port Authority, Georges Puchon, presented the progress and the different phases of construction of the new cruise terminal. He also mentioned the vision he wants to instill in the development and management of the Uturoa ferry terminal, which is also largely dedicated to tourism.
The president of Tahiti Cruise Club, Bud Gilroy, for his part exposed the organization of the show and the various appointments made or to take with various company officials. Tahiti Tourisme’s marketing director, Vaihere Lissant, spoke of the marketing opportunities envisaged, as well as media appointments and interviews with the specialized cruise press.
The actors were able to discuss the various facets of the mission at Seatrade and actively prepare for concerted and methodical actions to accelerate the growth of the activity in the next two to three years.
