Airport Vanuatu Ltd: COVID-19 Update 30 March 2020

Airports Vanuatu Ltd (AVL) today wishes to update all stakeholders on airport operations, in light of the directive from the National Disaster Management Office to all airlines, to suspend all air services:

  • All domestic air services ceased as of Monday 30 March;
  • Air Vanuatu have suspended domestic scheduled operations and all other carriers have ceased their charter operations; and
  • Airport terminals at Port Vila Airport, Santo Airport and Tanna Airport will be closed until further notice.

Jason Rakau, CEO of AVL said, “The suspension of domestic services is unprecedented and will have a significant impact. AVL remains committed to working closely with the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO), the Civil Aviation Authority of Vanuatu and our aviation stakeholders during the period that air services are suspended. AVL will continue to maintain our aviation infrastructure until the NDMO lift the suspension”.
“We continue to adhere to AVL’s guiding principles in managing the COVID-19 crisis, which are the compliant, safe and secure operations of our aviation infrastructure and continuing to communicate transparently with our stakeholders and staff”.

Operational Impacts: Temporary closure of airport terminals

AVL’s Management advises all stakeholders that usage of the terminals at Port Vila Airport, Santo Airport and Tanna Airport will be temporarily suspended in line with the suspension of air services from 30 March 2020.

Operational Impacts: Airport access restricted

All AVL airports will continue to work closely with all our aviation stakeholders to operate safe and secure services.

Kevin Abel, General Manager of Operations for AVL said, “Usage of AVL’s airports has effectively ceased with the suspension of domestic air services. During this period, flights may operate under the specific direction of the NDMO and AVL will open and staff terminals under those specific circumstances, as requested. During this period, our team are planning scenarios to recommence air services. Access to the airport is restricted during this time to those with aviation security passes only and our staff will continue to secure our airport land. We advise any passengers with specific queries regarding air travel to contact their airline or travel agent”.
