18 October 2024The Moso’oi Festival of Arts & Humanities is an annual celebration that brings the vibrant cultural and artistic traditions of American Samoa to life. Organized by the Agency for Better Living Endeavors (ABLE) with support from the American Samoa Government (ASG) and the American Samoa Visitors Bureau (ASVB), the 2024 festival is filled with activities aimed at preserving and promoting the rich heritage of the Samoan people.
The festival kicked off at Su’igaula o le Atuvasa in Utulei with a grand opening ceremony that included traditional entertainment, an introduction of the contestants for this year’s scholarship pageant, and an assortment of food stalls. The significance of the festival is deeply rooted in the Samoan culture, and a brief history of its name was shared during the event. The Moso’oi flower, known for its bright yellow petals and sweet fragrance, is symbolic of resilience and is used to welcome the palolo, a prized delicacy, to the shores of American Samoa during October.

The month-long festival offers a variety of events, each reflecting a different facet of Samoan life and creativity. Highlights include the Moso’oi Premiere, a Fa’afiafiaga (Samoan entertainment show) that features art-reach activities, and the Moso’oi Gala, where local artists display their masterpieces. An open mic event, Moso’oi Speaks, encourages community members to share stories, poetry, and cultural expressions, followed by a three-day fashion show, Moso’oi Fashion’s Night Out, that showcases Samoan fashion and design.
One of the key events, the Moso’oi Cultural Day, features the High School Siva competition, where students present traditional Samoan dances, fostering pride in their heritage. The festival concludes with the prestigious Mr. & Ms. Moso’oi Scholarship Pageant, where contestants demonstrate their cultural knowledge and talents in hopes of securing academic scholarships.
Governor Lemanu P. S. Mauga, who delivered a speech during the opening ceremony, emphasized the importance of festivals like Moso’oi in preserving the Samoan way of life. He stressed the need for younger generations to stay connected to their cultural identity, particularly through the Samoan language, which plays a crucial role in passing down stories and traditions across time.
The festival is a shining example of how modern Samoans continue to embrace and preserve their cultural heritage while finding ways to share it with the world.
The Moso’oi Festival of Arts & Humanities is more than just an annual celebration; it is a vital platform for cultural preservation and education. Through art, fashion, music, and traditional performances, the festival keeps the spirit of American Samoa alive and accessible to all.
