Collaborative Efforts Boost Sustainable Tourism in Nauru

Nauru’s Sustainable Tourism Working Group (STWG) continues to guide the nation’s tourism industry in providing more benefits to the local communities and businesses as arrivals continue to grow. This is supported by a strategic collaboration between the Nauru Tourism Office, the Nauru Chamber of Commerce, and Australian Business Volunteers (ABV). This partnership recognized the importance of engaging all aspects of the tourism industry—accommodation providers, local tour guides, artisans, and even cultural ambassadors like Miss Nauru.

One of the STWG’s standout achievements was the hosting of the first-ever Nauru Tourism Expo by the Nauru Tourism Office. The expo was a resounding success, drawing significant attention from the local community and international visitors alike. This success has solidified the event as an annual highlight, now permanently scheduled to coincide with World Tourism Day each year. The STWG’s efforts have also resulted in improvements to Nauru’s tourism infrastructure.

There were three “priority areas” identified by the STWG to enhance Nauru’s tourism sector. These are found below with recent updates on the progress the STWG has achieved for each area:

• Community Awareness: The Nauru Tourism Expo has become a key platform for raising awareness about the benefits and opportunities of sustainable tourism. It serves as a reminder that tourism is a collective effort, with the local community at the forefront.
• Inbound Tour Operations and Services: Nauru now boasts two registered tour guide companies, primarily composed of young people who have been trained through the Nauru Tourism Office’s “TourGuide Training Programme.” This development is a significant step forward in offering structured and professional tour services on the island.
• Short-Term Accommodations: The number of active short-term accommodation providers in Nauru has increased tenfold, from just two in the previous year to 20. This growth reflects a rising demand and a concerted effort to improve the island’s capacity to host visitors.

The STWG was established in April 2023 and marked a milestone in Nauru’s journey toward sustainable tourism. The initiative brought together a diverse range of stakeholders, including representatives from tourism businesses, Nauru Tourism, Nauru Chamber of Commerce, community government departments, and influential locals. The Working Group advocates for sustainable tourism in Nauru to be driven by the community, for the community. Before the country can focus on attracting more tourists, it is essential to ensure that residents are active partners and beneficiaries of the opportunities that tourism can bring.

The Nauru Tourism Office emphasizes the mantra, “Tourism is everybody’s business.” This collaborative approach is essential, as no single entity can drive sustainable tourism alone. The involvement of various stakeholders, including the STWG, the Nauru Chamber of Commerce, and the Australian Business Volunteers, has already yielded remarkable results. Notably, the partnership with the STWG and the immigration department for visa processing has led to a significant increase in visitors to the island over the past year.

This progress highlights the power of collaboration in fostering sustainable tourism and highlights the potential for continued growth in Nauru’s tourism sector.
