Community Attitude Surveys – Shaping Tourism Development in Tuvalu

To guide the future of tourism in Tuvalu and ensure it benefits everyone, the Department of Tourism launched the Community Attitude Surveys (CAS) to capture public opinions on the sector’s development. This initiative prioritises inclusive and sustainable tourism that aligns with the aspirations of Tuvaluan communities.

The survey, which went live on August 1st, was designed to reach as many Tuvaluans as possible. Hosted on the Tourism Department’s Facebook page, it provided an online platform for convenient participation.

Tourism officers from the Department also visited the outer islands, conducting in-person surveys using tablets to gather feedback from those without internet access. To encourage wide participation, a $50 recharge card was offered as an incentive.

The Tourism Department also engaged casual staff who were assigned to support the Tourism officers. The Department worked diligently to gather and analyse the valuable feedback shared by the community.

The data captured from the CAS will play a critical role in tailoring policies, decisions and development of tourism for the Tuvaluan communities. Additionally, responses and opinions gathered from the survey will help safeguard traditions and environment from any negative impacts from tourism.
