Many traditional structures no longer exist but cherished traditions are woven into modern village life.  Navala village in the Ba highlands is the only village where most houses are still built in the traditional style ie with thatch, reed walls and sinnet lashings.

Another cultural experience not to be missed is the traditional kava ceremony.  Kava is an earthy concoction made from the pounded root of a Pepper plant species and was originally drunk during ceremonial occasions.  Kava root is usually brought as a sevusevu or gift when asking a chiefs permission to visit his village or lands.

The people of Beqa in Fijis south have a unique give – they cannot be burnt by fire.  Legend has it that this ability was gifted to them by a capture veli or elf in exchange for his release.  Today, the traditional fire-walking ceremony on white-hot stones is only performed by the people of Beqa and those they invite to walk with them
