Dame Meg Taylor Re-Appointed As Secretary General

Papua New Guinea’s Dame Meg Taylor was unanimously appointed by Pacific leaders as Secretary General for a second, three-year term at the 48th Pacific Islands Forum summit in Samoa.
According to Radio New Zealand, leaders reaffirmed the Framework for Pacific Regionalism, seen as the platform for a renewed commitment to collective action to drive the region’s economic policy agenda.
They leaders also called for a united regional effort that establishes and secures international recognition of the permanent protection and integrity of the maritime zones and sovereignty, from the impacts of climate change and sea-level rise.
The forum’s official communiqué which Dame Meg Taylor will oversee reveals a united group of Pacific leaders keen to press ahead with issues concerning the Pacific region.
The Pacific Islands Forum Leaders at their Retreat in Peleliu State, Palau on July 31, 2014, announced Dame Meg Taylor, DBE, as the next Secretary General of the Pacific Islands Forum, making history as the first woman to be selected to hold the office. She took over from outgoing secretary general, Tuiloma Neroni Slade.
Dame Meg, currently a senior official at the World Bank, brought over 20 years of experience working in the region and internationally, including serving as PNG’s ambassador to the United States, Mexico and Canada.
Then chair of the 45th Pacific Islands Forum, President Remengesau Jr, welcomed Dame Meg’s selection saying,
“This is an important and historical decision for the premier political organisation in the region.
I am sure that Dame Meg Taylor will lead a successful Forum Secretariat into the future.”
