Direct Route Being Finalised

Particylars of a direct air route from Jayapura, in Indonesia, to Mt Hagen in the Western Highlands Province is being finalised, according to Department of Transport secretary Roy Mumu.

Mr Mumu said that an air service agreement has always existed between both countries with the current route to Bali serviced by flag carrier Air Niugini and another route to Vanimo, with the sought after route from Jayapura to Mt Hagen requested by PNG Air.
“We have always had air service agreement with Indonesia. The last discussions I think was around 2013 which allowed for Bali as a point of destination.

“As a result Air Niugini goes there every Monday evenings. The Sentani (Jayapura) Airport has always been a port of entry except it was always from Vanimo.

“So (Mt) Hagen has been the latest point and a specific request from PNG Air, which has been granted, there has been some discussions with PNG Air and the service providers on the ground.”

Mr Mumu said formal approvals between both governments arrangements under the air service agreement are already concluded.
He said all in all, the country has 14 air service agreements, the latest of which is with Marshall Islands.
