Eco-luxury resort aims to go plastic-free by 2022

In a world where luxury isn’t easily associated with sustainability, Six Senses Fiji provides impetus to think and act differently.

Located on Malolo Island in Fiji’s pristine Mamanuca group, Six Senses Fiji offers an unmatched experience in luxury, local culture, adventure and sustainability programmes.

Internationally renowned, the Six Senses brand centers on wellness and sustainability. These values underpin their entire operations, from architecture which accounts for land topography and the use of renewable building materials to a commitment to have completely plastic free properties from 2022.

With one of the largest off-grid solar installations in the Southern Hemisphere, Six Senses Fiji is no different and boasts a range of sustainability programs including:

  • Iguana conservation

It is home to 39 Fiji Crested Iguanas; Six Senses Fiji began the initiative in 2018 with only 17 iguanas and is proud to contribute to the protection and growth of this critically endangered native species of which less than 5,000 remain in the world.

  • Social responsibility

Six Senses Fiji works at strengthening genuine connections with local communities. Not only is local employment and sourcing locally and responsibly produced goods a priority, but during the COVID-19 pandemic this extended to purchasing produce from local communities, most of whom are former employees.

  • Renewable Energy

Using Tesla battery packs and with the largest micro grid in South Pacific, all Six Senses Fiji facilities are designed to be solar powered including the resorts desalination plant which draws water from the ocean for irrigation and use in pools.

So ingrained is this commitment to environmental and social responsibility that in 2018 Six Senses Fiji won the Climate Action Category of the 2018 Hotel Investment Conference Asia Pacific (HICAP) Sustainable Hotel Awards, where they were acknowledged for sustainable best practices in incorporating sustainability into all aspects of the resort and operations.

Meaningful guest experiences are intrinsically linked to the well-being of local communities and ecosystems and this is a standard which the Pacific tourism industry would benefit from aspiring to.
