Pacific Voyaging – Critical Traditional Knowledge
7 July 2022As part of Samoa’s commitment to sustainable tourism, progress has been made towards the reduction of energy consumption in the accommodation sector. As such, a partnership between the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, Samoa Tourism Authority and the Regional Pacific Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) Hub was established to better support energy efficiency initiatives.
These energy efficiency initiatives are crucial in the reduction of operating costs of the accommodation sector. The partnership saw the undertaking of energy audits and workshops for medium and large hotels and relevant stakeholders.
The Taumeasina Island Resort energy audit highlighted the need for:
- Assessing resort/hotel development policies, management practices, energy efficiency and conservation projects to inform planning and decision making;
- Identifying opportunities, plans, and financial assistance for the implementation of energy reduction projects;
- Introducing practical strategies for reducing hotel operating costs; and
- Targeting eco-conscious guests.
Further, the findings showed a consistent average energy consumption of 35 – 67 kWh per occupied room per day which is attributed to the successful execution of energy efficiency and conservation initiatives.
The energy audit and workshop allowed participants and facilitators the opportunity to share knowledge and experiences in energy conservation methods and technologies used within the accommodation sector. Participants are expected to carry out future energy audits for Savaii and Upolu islands.
The initiative was sponsored by the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) and implemented by the partners.
