Celebrating a Decade of Marine Conservation: The Natural Park of the Coral Sea Turns 10
11 December 2024In the heart of the Pacific, New Caledonia’s pristine beauty is not just a destination; it’s a commitment to sustainability. Since its launch in 2020, the ‘New Cal Specialist’ training and loyalty programme, developed by New Caledonia Tourism (NCT), has redefined the way tour operators and travel agents connect with this exceptional archipelago. More than a training tool, it’s a gateway to a future where tourism and sustainability walk hand in hand.
The ‘New Cal Specialist’ programme was created to equip travel professionals with the knowledge and tools needed to showcase New Caledonia’s natural wonders responsibly. Aimed at retailers and travel agents, the programme boasts an impressive membership of over 2,700 professionals who are now ambassadors for sustainable tourism in the region.
The programme recently underwent a comprehensive overhaul, introducing an inspiring design and user-friendly interface. New features delve deeper into the archipelago’s ecological treasures, highlighting best practices, conservation efforts, and the positive impacts of sustainable tourism. Participants gain insights into eco-friendly accommodations, cultural preservation, and community well-being, all while understanding how their efforts contribute to the destination’s global reputation.
The ‘New Cal Specialist’ programme offers a dynamic blend of online training courses, webinars, and meaningful incentives. Through interactive sessions, participants explore topics like:
• Preserving Nature: Discover New Caledonia’s unique ecosystems, from UNESCO World Heritage-listed lagoons to untouched rainforests.
• Promoting Ecotourism: Learn about sustainable accommodations and activities that leave a light footprint.
• Respecting Culture: Understand the significance of cultural heritage and its integral role in shaping tourism experiences.
Beyond learning, the programme rewards participants with sustainable incentives. These range from eco-conscious gifts to financial contributions supporting local projects. For instance, in 2024, retailers helped fund Pandanus Yvy, a project by the Kaewatine tribe in Maré that sustainably cultivates and transforms pandanus into traditional handicrafts, boosting the community’s financial well-being.
Over the years, NCT has partnered with initiatives like the WWF SEVE programme (2021-2022) and naturAction NC to fund impactful projects. These partnerships not only support local communities but also empower tour operators to take an active role in protecting New Caledonia’s heritage.
New Caledonia’s approach is clear: sustainable tourism is not just a trend; it’s the future. Through the ‘New Cal Specialist’ programme, NCT is achieving three critical goals:
- Attracting Eco-Tourists: By emphasizing slow and eco-tourism, the destination appeals to conscientious travellers seeking authentic, sustainable experiences.
- Engaging Stakeholders: Tour operators become key players in promoting practices that are good for the planet and aligned with the destination’s values.
- Supporting Local Communities: Financial contributions and collaborative projects ensure that tourism benefits the people and preserves the environment for generations to come.
As New Caledonia redefines responsible tourism, the ‘New Cal Specialist’ programme is an invitation to travel professionals worldwide. Highlighting the archipelago’s breathtaking beauty, support its communities, and ensure a brighter, greener future.
