Expo Celebrates 250 Years Of Bougainville’s Arrival In Tahiti

“Samuel Wallis was the first tourist in Tahiti, Louis-Antoine de Bougainville was the first promoter of the island and we will see in a year, what will be of James Cook”, jokes Hironui Johnston, missionary at the Ministry of Tourism on Friday during the presentation of the exhibition commemorating the arrival of the navigator Louis-Antoine de Bougainville in Tahiti in Hitia’a Bay, April 6, 1768. This exhibition is organized by Tahiti Tourisme, as part of the trilogy of the arrival of three great European explorers: “250 years ago”. Last year, the historian was looking at the arrival of Wallis in Tahiti in 1767, this year it is the turn of Bougainville, and next year, a new exhibition will focus on James Cook, who landed in 1769.

Leaving Saint-Malo on the frigate La Boudeuse in 1766 to restore the Malouines (Falkland Islands currently) to Spain under the command of Louis XV, Louis-Antoine de Bougainville helped the local populations who wished to join America Latin. Once, this mission accomplished, joined by the Flute, the navigator, with on board several scientists, whose astronomer, Pierre-Antoine Véron, the cartographer Charles Routier of Romainville and the naturalist Philibert Commerson, continued his tour of the world for cast anchor in Tahiti on April 6, 1768.

An interesting little anecdote, the naturalist, Philibert Commerson was in awe of a flamboyant liana, which he nicknamed La bougainvillea, in reference to the captain’s name. Another anecdote about this same Philibert Commerson, the man had brought with him, a certain Jean Baré, who was actually called Jeanne. Disguised as a man, because women were not allowed in the boat, she was the first woman to go around the world!
Once in Tahiti, Bougainville negotiated with a local chief, by means of pebbles, to be able to stay 15 days on the island of Tahiti. Bougainville and his crew had to shorten their stay after nine days due to poor weather conditions.

If Bougainville did not return from his trip to Tahiti, which he called the new Kythera (synonymous with love and passion) spices or gold, he brought at his request a Tahitian named Aoutorou in La France. Faithful to his word, Bougainville paid on his own money for his return trip, unfortunately the man died of smallpox on the return journey.

But especially Bougainville brought back from his epic a magnificent account of Tahiti Voyage around the world , which was the starting point of the myth of our island around the world!
