February Records Increase In Visitor Arrivals To Fiji

There was an increase of 4,922 in foreign visitor arrivals to Fiji last month compared to a year earlier, according to a monthly Fiji Bureau of Statistics report.

A total of 48,798 compared to 43, 876  in February last year – an increase of  11.2 per cent.

A majority 72.4 per cent came to the country for holiday purposes.

Tourism plays a major role in the economy, according to Investment Fiji.

The sector contributes 17 per cent to national Gross Domestic Product and enables the employment to around 40,000 people.

Provisional visitor arrivals for February indicate that travellers in the 25 to 64 age range accounted for 68.8 per cent of those who visited Fiji in that month.

In its recent release the Fiji Bureau of Statistics highlighted that children aged 14 and below accounted for 10.3 per cent of the February visitor arrivals, 11.3 per cent were youths aged 15 to 24 with the remaining 9.6 per cent comprising those in the predominantly retirement age group of 65 and above.

Meanwhile statistics also showed that visitor arrivals for February this year totalled 48,798, which was an increase of 11.2 per cent compared with a year earlier.

Increases were recorded in the number of visitors from China, Australia, New Zealand, US, Continental Europe, Rest of Asia and Canada.

The bureau also noted decreases in the number of visitors from countries such as Pacific Islands, Japan, South Korea and the United Kingdom.

Visitors arriving for holiday purposes accounted for 72.4 per cent of total arrivals, 7.4 per cent came to visit their friends and relatives, 4.5 per cent came for business purposes while 15.7 per cent visited Fiji for other reasons.

Other statistics compiled by the bureau show that in the moving 12 monthly numbers ending February 2018, the total number of visitors to Fiji increased by 5.8 per cent compared with the same period last year.

Visitors from Rest of Asia increased by 20.4 per cent, US by 13.6 per cent, New Zealand by 12.4 per cent, other countries by 11.7 per cent, Continental Europe by 10.2 per cent, Canada by 6.5 per cent, South Korea 6.4 per cent, Pacific Islands by 6.3 per cent, Australia 1.1 per cent and United Kingdom 0.3 per cent.

Meanwhile the bureau noted decreases in visitors from Japan and China.
