The Federated States of Micronesia: Pioneers in Sustainable Tourism and Regional Cooperation
30 May 2025From the shores of the Pacific to the global stage in Osaka, Japan, the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) is making waves at the World Expo 2025. From April 12th to October 13th, nations from every corner of the world converge in celebration of culture, innovation, and the future, and FSM is proudly standing tall among them.
Guided by the theme “Weaving Our Cultural Heritage through Innovative Livelihood,” FSMs’ participation is more than symbolic — it reflects a nation rooted in ancient wisdom, rich in tradition, yet boldly embracing the promise of tomorrow. It’s a story of resilience, of harmony between heritage and innovation. This is FSM’s moment to share our stories, showcase our ingenuity, and connect with global citizens in ways that are both timeless and forward-looking.
At the heart of the Expo grounds in Kansai, Osaka, FSM’s national booth stands as a vibrant testament to its island identity and cultural pride. More than just an exhibit, the booth is a living celebration of people deeply rooted in tradition yet embracing the future. Spearheaded by the FSM Department of Resources & Development (R&D) in close collaboration with the State Governments of Yap, Chuuk, Pohnpei, and Kosrae, it offers an immersive experience through traditional Micronesian crafts, captivating visual displays, and authentic storytelling that reflects the spirit and resilience of our people.
Visitors to the FSM booth are taken on a journey through time and tradition, with handwoven artefacts, intricate carvings, and cultural demonstrations showcasing the Micronesian way of life. Alongside these, modern innovations and digital showcases highlight the sustainable practices and forward-thinking solutions emerging from our islands. This unique blend of heritage and innovation allows FSM to present not only what we have preserved but also what we are becoming — a nation deeply connected to its past while looking ahead to a sustainable and prosperous future.
To ensure that each state has a moment to shine on the world stage, FSM has adopted a rotating monthly schedule throughout the six-month Expo. From May to June, Yap State is featured, followed by Chuuk from June to July, Kosrae from July to August, and Pohnpei from August to September. The final month, September to October, is designated as FSM Month, a collective showcase that unites the voices of all four states in a powerful celebration of national identity. This rotation not only highlights the diverse cultures within FSM but also allows each state to promote its unique tourism products, services, and business opportunities to a global audience.
FSM’s presence at the World Expo is more than just participation — it’s an impactful moment in our history. By telling our stories, sharing our solutions, and inviting the world into our way of life, we’re building global awareness of the FSM brand and opening new doors for partnerships, tourism, and development.
