FSM-Yap CAS Report 2024

Executive Summary

The FSM Yap Community Attitudes Survey (CAS) 2024 was conducted from October to December 2024 to assess the perceptions of local residents on tourism’s impact and explore ways to enhance Yap as a travel destination. The survey collected 232 responses, with 220 valid entries analyzed.

This survey was carried out through QR codes and online links. Data was collected from 232 respondents, of which 220 valid responses were analyzed to provide insights into local perspectives on tourism’s role in Yap’s future.

98% of respondents were Yapese, with 40% having been born in Yap and never lived overseas. The predominant age group was 25-34 years. The majority of survey responses came from the Tamil community (21%), while participation was lowest from Ulithi, Woleai, and Fais, each contributing 1% of responses.

17% of respondents worked in or owned a tourism-related business. 26% reported earning income from the tourism industry. Communities in Rumung, Ulithi, Woleai, and Fais did not report direct economic benefits from tourism.

While tourism is seen as beneficial for the local economy and cultural exchange, residents expressed concerns over limited infrastructure, lack of cultural tourism options, and the high cost of travel to Yap. Many respondents suggested expanding tourism beyond diving, promoting village life and cultural experiences.

Recommendations for future development included improved tourism marketing and promotion by the Yap Visitors Bureau (YVB), enhancing cultural tourism activities and preserving historical sites, and strengthening community awareness and participation in tourism planning.
