Insurance Cover For Village Visitors

The Colo-i-Suva Eco tourism committee plans to arrange insurance cover for tourists visiting the village from next year.

This was confirmed by committee chairperson Usaia Tekuku, who said he arranged for a special meeting with the committee members to discuss further on the issue in the coming months.

He said it was important to get tourists insured because it contributed to their own safety.

“It has been three years now the tourists have been visiting the Colo-i-Suva Village. The funds received from these visitations is distributed amongst the villagers here,” Mr Tekuku said.

“From next year, we will try to get the tourists insured for the benefit of everyone. That is the only thing left for us to do.”

Mr Tekuku said over the past years, the money collected was used to build a shed within the village to provide shelter for the tourists where they could relax and watch the various cultural items being performed.

“The women in the village set up the stalls and sell handicrafts made from their own hands. This is the only source of income for them,” he said.

“We also made footpaths along the village to make it easier for tourists to walk when they visit. We are still looking at making more footpaths.”

He said some employees of the Air Terminal Services (ATS) had helped them by bringing tourists to the village.

Mr Tekuku thanked all the people and organisations that had supported the village in the eco-tourism sector over the years.
