International Tourism Trends Provide Promising Outlook for Pacific Tourism

The Pacific Tourism Organisation (SPTO) has welcomed data released by the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) indicating a steady recovery of international tourism for the first five months of 2022.

According to the UNWTO World Tourism Barometer, almost 250 million international arrivals were recorded from January – May this year. This compares to 77 million arrivals for the same period in 2021, meaning that the sector has recovered almost half of pre-pandemic 2019 levels.

Comparison by region shows that Asia Pacific is expected to lag behind due to ongoing restrictive travel policies. Although arrivals into the region almost doubled, the figures were still significantly lower than the same pre-pandemic period (2019). Current forecasting for the remainder of 2022 predicts that arrivals into Asia Pacific will reach around 30% of 2019 levels.

In acknowledging the importance of this data, SPTO CEO Christopher Cocker said that it is heartening to see overall positive trends in relation to international arrivals and rising tourism spending, which will spread to the Pacific in due course.

“Here in the Pacific our approach to tourism reactivation has been a lot more cautious and rightly so. However, with many of our countries now open to tourism again it is encouraging to see positive trends which will undoubtedly take hold in the Pacific as we gain more momentum in the coming months”, he said.

Mr. Cocker added that the pandemic provided an opportunity for countries to reflect and re-imagine tourism offerings so as to ensure that the Pacific tourism product is more productive, sustainable, resilient and inclusive.

“We know that tourism cannot simply revert to what it was. We need to build back better – stronger, smarter and more sustainably. More than ever before our member countries have an appetite for this kind of change which will undoubtedly benefit our Blue Pacific”, he said.

SPTO is currently driving the following key initiatives aimed at supporting regional progress towards sustainable tourism:
