The week-long visit was marked by a series of community engagements, tourism promotions, and key economic events aimed at strengthening local livelihoods through sustainable tourism and enterprise development.
Accompanying the Minister was reigning Miss Kiribati 2024–2025, Kimberly Tokanang, who was warmly received by the people of Kiritimati. Her visit added a cultural and inspirational dimension, as she interacted with community groups, schools, and church organisations.
The key highlights of the five-day visit included:
Day 1: The delegation was officially welcomed by the island’s leaders and attended a special event hosted by the Kiritimati Island Catholic Parish.
Day 2: The group toured Poland Village and Long Beach, two key tourism destinations on the island. During the visit, TAK staff shared insights into the Homestay Promotion Initiative, which aims to empower local households by offering authentic cultural experiences to tourists. Poland Village has been an active participant in this initiative, contributing to grassroots tourism development.
Day 3: Miss Tokanang led a vibrant float procession from London Village to Banana Village. The procession made several community stops, including the island’s main hospital, local schools, and various church groups. Residents had the opportunity to meet Miss Tokanang, take photos, and share their excitement for her historic visit.
Day 4: The delegation attended the International Women’s Day celebration and the Kiritimati Island Business Awards as Guests of Honour. These events celebrated the achievements of women and recognised outstanding local entrepreneurs, reinforcing the importance of inclusive economic growth.
Day 5: The visit concluded with the official opening of the new Copra Mill Processing Factory—a major development for the island’s agricultural sector. Miss Kiribati also met with the Kiribati United Church (KUC) community.
Miss Tokanang reflected on her visit as a truly memorable experience, expressing gratitude for the warm hospitality and vibrant community spirit. As a cultural ambassador, her presence spotlighted the value of community and culture in tourism and development.
The Minister’s visit, alongside Miss Tokanang, affirmed the government’s commitment to advancing tourism as a tool for community empowerment and sustainable livelihoods. Their presence also helped to amplify Kiritimati Island’s potential as a unique destination on both domestic and international platforms.
The visit served as a reminder that tourism when grounded in local ownership and cultural identity, can be a transformative force—promoting resilience, economic opportunity, and national pride for communities across Kiribati.
