Miss Nauru Leads Replanting Initiative to Combat Coastal Erosion Ahead of November Youth Leadership Summit

The upcoming Youth Leadership Summit, an annual flagship event of the Pacific Australia Youth Association, is scheduled for November 2024 in Nauru. It serves as a key platform for addressing pressing environmental issues facing the Pacific Island nation. Central to this initiative is Miss Nauru 2023, Rosita Roma Rokobuli, who is spearheading a replanting program for the Scaevola Sericea plant, commonly referred to in Nauru as the “Emet” plant. The species holds immense cultural and medicinal significance in Nauruan society, with its importance stemming from ancient tribal practices. It served as a vital resource for traditional medicine and ceremonial attire in the past and continues to serve these roles to this day.

Scaevola Sericea is known for its role in combating coastal erosion, an increasingly critical concern amid the ongoing climate crisis affecting Pacific islands. The preservation and restoration of this native plant not only enhances biodiversity but also strengthens coastal ecosystems against the ravages of climate change. As future generations cope with these challenges, initiatives like Rosita’s replanting program are essential for ensuring environmental sustainability and resilience within local communities.

As an ambassador for Nauru Tourism and an advocate for sustainable practices, Rosita collaborates with the Nauru Tourism Office and engages youth on the island to foster greater awareness of this initiative. By mobilising young people leading up to the Youth Summit, she aims to cultivate a collective commitment toward environmental stewardship among her peers. Furthermore, her designation as Sustainability Champion reflects her dedication to advocating for ecological initiatives that resonate deeply within her cultural context.

Though still in its planning phase, this project demonstrates promise and aligns with broader regional efforts led by organisations such as the Pacific Australia Youth Association Inc. (PAYA). The collaborative nature of these efforts underscores a vital connection between cultural heritage and contemporary environmental advocacy—a synergy that will empower future generations while honouring Nauru’s rich traditions.
