Nauru Government Approves Landmark Trail Upgrades to Boost Tourism and Preserve Cultural Heritage

The Nauru Government has granted approval for the Nauru Tourism Office to conduct maintenance on four key trails and landmark sites. This decision represents a significant advancement in the island’s commitment to enriching its tourism offerings while safeguarding its cultural legacy. This proactive initiative will bolster local tourism and contribute to the preservation of the country’s cultural heritage.

Engaging a private contractor, the Tourism Office commenced these essential maintenance works in June, with an anticipated completion date set for the end of September. The sites targeted for improvement include the Eaguabaran Trail (The first Tribes), Ganakoro Trail (Iwi Tribe Saga), Chiselled Arched Trail (History of Early Mining), and Hambruch Trail (Araiman & Abwijokow). Historically, these trails have suffered from neglect, lacking proper maintenance that would make them accessible and safe for both locals and visitors.

This initiative, which focuses on improving accessibility and safety, is set to improve tourism services in Nauru. These trails, once known primarily to local historians and Noddy bird catchers, have long remained hidden from the broader public. They were often inaccessible to tourists eager to explore Nauru’s natural beauty. The ongoing project aims to clear these pathways, making them more accessible and raising awareness of Nauru’s rich historical heritage among visitors.

Whilst the increased tourist traffic  to these sites are welcomed, notable damages along the paths have been observed. The Nauru Tourism Office highlights the importance of respecting nature and cultural artefacts during visits. Efforts to promote  an environment that values preservation alongside exploration among visitors and local communities  will ensure that Nauru remains a beautiful destination while honouring its unique heritage.
