Pacific Tourism Organisation Champions Tourism’s Role in Unlocking Blue Pacific Prosperity Goal 1 Solutions Lab in Palau
17 April 2025The heartbeat of Pacific tourism echoed through the corridors of Port Moresby’s Hilton Hotel from April 9–10, as the Pacific Tourism Organisation (SPTO) participated in the National Tourism Conference & Expo 2025—a landmark celebration of Papua New Guinea’s vibrant tourism sector.
With the nation on the cusp of its 50th year of independence, the event was more than a conference—it was a national statement of identity, unity, and ambition. Hosted in partnership by the Papua New Guinea Tourism Promotion Authority (PNGTPA), Mineral Resource Development Company Ltd (MRDC), and the Papua New Guinea Tourism Industry Association (PNGTIA), the two-day extravaganza brought together over 300 delegates, 31 powerful speakers, and 43 vibrant exhibitors, all rallying around a shared vision: elevating PNG as a dynamic, world-class tourism destination.
“This event signals a bold new chapter in PNG’s tourism development,” said SPTO Chief Executive Officer Christopher Cocker. “As the country celebrates five decades of nationhood, it is also looking forward—championing sustainable tourism, investing in partnerships, and embracing its identity as the land of a million different journeys. SPTO is honoured to be part of this momentum.”
Amidst the buzz of booths and the exchange of bold ideas, SPTO made its presence felt—not just as a guest, but as a committed partner in the region’s tourism transformation. From promoting flagship initiatives like the Pacific Storytelling Specialist Programme and Industry Membership Programme, to building bridges with donor partners and potential sponsors, the organisation used the event to deepen its connections and expand its impact.
With SPTE 2025, the Sustainable Division Workshop, and the upcoming SPTO Board Meeting on the horizon, the event also served as a timely platform to strengthen collaboration with PNGTPA on realignment and renewed engagement.
As PNG looks to the next 50 years, SPTO stands ready—charting the way forward alongside its members, one unforgettable journey at a time.
“Papua New Guinea plays a vital role in the Pacific tourism landscape,” Mr Cocker added. “Our participation here allows us to listen, learn, and build strong pathways together. It also reinforces our commitment to showcasing the unique stories and voices that define tourism in the Pacific.”
