The Pacific Tourism Organisation (SPTO) joined regional and international partners at the recent 7th SWITCH–Asia Annual Meeting and Programme Steering Committee Meeting in Bangkok, Thailand, from 27–29 October 2025. Discussions centred on “Scaling Up the Circular Economy in Asia: Bridging Policy, Practice and Investments through the EU Global Gateway,” key stakeholders gathered to strengthen cooperation and accelerate sustainable consumption, production, and circular economy transitions across the region.
SPTO was part of the programme, focused on knowledge exchange, collaboration, and strengthening regional approaches to SCP, and Part IV, which highlights lessons from on-the-ground circular economy initiatives across Asia and the Pacific.
As a recognised regional leader in sustainable tourism, SPTO was also been invited to speak during Session 1 of Part IV, sharing insights from Phase 1 of the EU funded Sustainable Tourism Enhancement in the Pacific (STEP) project and the roadmap for Phase 2. The presentation showcased how policy alignment, regional cooperation, and targeted capacity-building are supporting tourism stakeholders in transitioning toward greener, more resilient practices in line with the EU Green Deal and Global Gateway.
Participation in this forum reinforces SPTO’s commitment to elevating Pacific perspectives in global sustainability dialogues and strengthening partnerships that support a regenerative and climate-resilient tourism future for the Blue Pacific.
SPTO Chief Executive Officer Christopher Cocker noted that the invitation reflects growing recognition of the Pacific’s leadership in sustainable and regenerative tourism.
“The Pacific is charting its own pathway toward a tourism sector that is resilient, inclusive, and aligned with our cultural values and environmental priorities,” he said. “Our collaboration with the EU funded SWITCH–Asia through the STEP Project has demonstrated how regional cooperation can translate global sustainability principles into practical solutions for our island communities. This meeting is an important opportunity to share our experience, strengthen partnerships, and continue building momentum for Phase 2 of STEP and the wider circular economy transition in the Pacific.”
He added that SPTO remains committed to elevating Pacific voices in global sustainability dialogues and ensuring tourism contributes positively to the well-being of Pacific people and places.
