Pacific Tourism Organisation School and Youth Outreach

As part of its sustainable development outreach objectives, the Pacific Tourism Organisation had the opportunity to talanoa with the students of Rotuma High School in Malha’a on 29th March 2022.  The meeting highlighted the importance of sustainable tourism development by ensuring tourism in the Pacific Islands is environmentally responsible, socially acceptable and economically viable for a resilient and inclusive future.  An overview of tourism globally and in the Pacific as well as lessons from pre-pandemic times were also shared. 

Highlighting the value of education and perseverance, the Chief Executive Officer of SPTO Mr. Christopher Cocker encouraged the students to dream big, and capitalize on opportunities available through education. “The world is your oyster, we each have a calling but you need to be bold, step out and make a difference in whatever field you choose”, he said.  

A similar platform was provided to youth representatives from the surrounding communities on 30^th March to dialogue on future ambitions, pathways available and lessons from the SPTO team and Rotuman tourism expert and creative consultant. 

Both events were attended by around 50 students and 15 youth.  The SPTO acknowledges with gratitude the Madam Principal Ms. Sereana Tuapati and her staff as well as the Youth Coordinator for the opportunity granted. 

The two outreach sessions were made possible through the Rotuma Plastic Repurposing Workshop, conducted by SPTO in partnership with creative consultant Warwick Marlow, from 28th to 30th March at the Rotuma Government Station.
