The Pacific Tourism Organisation (SPTO) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with FISU Oceania to promote and strengthen sports tourism and the Pacific region to a wider global community.
As the governing body of university sports in Oceania, FISU Oceania is one of five continental university sports federations under the organisation of the International University Sports Federation (FISU). Founded in 2008 as a FISU initiative to promote the advancement of university student sports programmes at the Oceania regional and international level.
In acknowledging the importance of the MOU, SPTO CEO Christopher Cocker highlighted the great potential that sports and tourism have in the region, given that sports is a significant element in the Pacific region. Adding that interest and participation in sports are growing within the leisure industry, with more and more people keen to travel as competitors or spectators.
“The Pacific tourism sector has the potential to play a greater role in the development of university sports not only in the region but also on a global platform. We welcome this partnership with FISU Oceania as it aligns with SPTO’S Strategic Plan 2020-2024 to reset, rethink and rebuild post-Covid-19 and the potential it has in emerging niche segments such as sports tourism,” Mr Cocker said.
FISU Oceania President, David Schmude also acknowledged the importance of the MOU between the two organisations.
“FISU Oceania is looking forward to further connecting the university sport and tourism sectors in the Pacific region via our MOU with SPTO. This connection will not only provide more opportunities to host international university sports events in Oceania nations but will also enable us to promote the Pacific region to a globally connected university audience, Mr Schmude said.
