With tears in her eyes and cheers from the crowd Pam Christie, one of Kokoda’s first female guides, walked beneath the arches at Owers Corner on the 17th September, marking the completion of her 60th Kokoda trek. This was a momentous occasion for the pioneering adventurer who completed her first Kokoda Trek back in 1998. She went on to start her own company, PNG Trekking Adventures, to share her love of exploring with tourists.
Pam is planning one more Kokoda trek with friends and family, before focusing her energy on ways to attract more tourists to explore Papua New Guinea.Find out more about Pam Christie and PNG Trekking Adventures
With the backing of the PNG Tourism Promotion Authority she has been able to open up tracks throughout the country allowing the villages to directly benefit from eco tourism. The Black Cat and the Bull Dog Tracks are just two of the tracks that are now commercially trekked by PNGTA and other operators.
Prior to Pam going into the villages in these areas there was no health, education, water or communication. In liaison with such organisations as the Tourism Promotion Authority, the Kokoda Track Authority and Australian High Commission in Papua New Guinea they are working together to implement sustainable tourism throughout the country so that Papua New Guineans directly benefit from tourism income.
