Papua New Guinea First Hospitality Expo A Success

The PNG Tourism Industry Association Inc.hosted the nation’s first ever Hospitality Expo in Port Moresby, 24-25 May 2017.
The Expo ran for two days constituting an information and workshop session on the first day for industry participants and an exposé the following day for the public in the morning, while networking opportunities took place for exhibitors in the afternoon.
The workshop and sessions provided insight into the nation’s tourism market and encouraged discussion on challenges and issues faced by the nation’s tourism and hospitality industry.
“The morning exhibits were for the benefit of schools and the public to see what’s on offer by our small to medium operators of lodges, guesthouses and inns,” said Mrs Christine Peipul, PNGTIA executive manager.
“The expo is a big step forward in addressing such issues as regulation, which will help us identify how to help improve the sector’s standards.  We’ve had a good turnout for the Expo with representatives coming all the way from Jiwaka, Kerema, Sepik, Manus and New Ireland,” said Mrs Carmella Gabina, PNGTIA member and expo organising committee chairperson.
Participants and part-sponsors of the Hospitality Expo were the PNG Tourism Promotion Authority who showcased their Accommodation Accreditation Scheme (ACS) project.
The ACS is an accommodation classification system that encourages tourism accommodation providers to meet criteria to achieve internationally acceptable standards of tourism accommodation.  The project is currently voluntary with over 90 accommodation properties accredited in the NCD, Milne Bay, Madang, New Ireland, East New Britain,Eastern Highlands and Simbu.
The PNGTIA Hospitality Expo was sponsored by the PNG Tourism Promotion Authority,Crowne Plaza Port Moresby, InnQuest Australia, Sepik Adventure Tours, Prime Communications Security Systems Specialist, Delectable Delights and GCR – Geo Consultant & Research.
The PNG Tourism Industry Association Inc. currently has 43 members and is still growing.
The PNGTIA will be hosting another major tourism expo at the Port Moresby Nature Parkin September – the Lukim PNG Nau Tourism Expo.
The aim of the Hospitality Expo was to bring together local SME’s in the hospitality sector and better acquaint them with the tourism industry.
The expo featured an information session and exhibition.
