Papua New Guinea’s Prime Minister, Peter O’Neill, has welcomed traditional iTaukei ceremonies performed on his first official visit to Fiji.
Mr O’Neill, who touched down at Nausori International Airport yesterday afternoon, said he was really touched by the ceremonies which showed Fiji’s rich culture and traditions. The PNG PM met his Fijian counterpart Voreqe Bainimarama for bilateral talks after the ceremonies.
There was no official word on the details of discussions, but it was expected to focus on trade and the Asia Pacific Economic Co-operation (APEC) meeting in Port Moresby in November this year.
PM O’Neill and his party’s plane was delayed for 45 minutes and on arrival at Nausori he was accorded a 50-person guard of honour by officers and soldiers of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF).
From the airport the entourage left for the Grand Pacific Hotel for the full traditional ceremonies of welcome.
Those who made the presentations thanked Mr O’Neill for his visit and assured him that he would be safe in the country and enjoy his short stay.
