Policy Framework for a Shared Vision for Sustainable Tourism in the Pacific

A Preliminary Analysis Report completed in January highlights that ‘sustainable tourism will only be a reality in the Pacific when there is a shared understanding, clear priorities and a collaborative approach to address them’.

The report is part of the development process in establishing a Pacific Sustainable Tourism Policy Framework (PSTPF) that will encapsulate a shared vision for sustainable tourism in the Pacific.  The initiative is led by SPTO and its Member Countries with the support of the New Zealand Government and the United Nations Development Programme Inclusive Growth Programme. 

The Policy Framework will:

• Ensure that tourism meets the needs of communities and protects natural and cultural heritage
• Support national governments and destination managers in implementing sustainable tourism policies.
• Establish an enabling environment for the private sector to grow responsibly and contribute to the wellbeing of the communities and resources on which they depend
• Ensure that partners work together to mobilise resources for national, regional, international and cross-sectoral collaboration for sustainable tourism. 

TRC Tourism is supporting this work under the guidance of a Regional Working Group, comprising of SPTO member country representatives, private sector, civil society, regional agencies and development partners.  Stakeholders who wish to contribute to the framework are invited to contact SPTO as soon as possible and take note of cluster group consultations being organised in the next three weeks, from 8 – 26 February 2021.
