Radisson Blu & Fiji Marriott Resorts In Fiji Plan To Mark Earth Hour With Guests

With the annual Earth Hour event only a few days away, staff members at Denarau’s Radisson Blu Resort Fiji have begun preparations to commemorate the occasion this Saturday.

Resort director of sales and marketing Suzie Jones said the resort hosted the event every year to promote Earth Hour.

“We have already taken steps to protect our environment here in Fiji, some of these initiatives are solar panels on the roof of the hotel making this the largest in the Southern Hemisphere, water tanks around the resort to ensure our gardens are kept lovely and saving town water, recycling of paper and waste management initiatives,” she said.

Ms Jones said the resort had programs every year where guests were also invited to support Earth Hour.

“From, 8.30pm to 9.30pm, we request this (lights out), however, we do make allowances for young babies and the elderly. Most guests abide by this and also dine with candlelight.

“Our environment is important to the future of our children and grandchildren to live a safe and happy life. Also, we at Radisson Blu are passionate about the environment and a socially responsible business.”

Earth Hour will be marked globally this Saturday.

Meanwhile Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay will also go dark for one hour on March 24 to shine a light on climate action in support of Earth Hour 2018.

A statement from the hotel yesterday said the hotel would join millions around the world in turning off its lights at 8:30pm local time to illuminate a powerful message about environmental awareness and action.

The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) created the annual global environmental awareness event 11 years ago to emphasise the threat of climate change.

Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay will participate by turning off exterior signage lighting; dimming or turning off non-essential interior lighting; using candlelight in appropriate public areas such as restaurants and bars; and informing guests about Earth Hour observances.

During Earth Hour there will also be a power generating rowing machine installed in the lobby used to power the lobby lights.

“It’s a privilege for us to support Earth Hour because it echoes Marriott International’s global focus on the environment,” said Denise Naguib, vice-president of Sustainability and Supplier Diversity.
