SPTO Knowledge Hub

Welcome to the Pacific Tourism Organisation’s (SPTO) Regional Tourism Resource Centre (RTRC), an online tourism database that centralises essential information such as air tourist arrivals, air visitor surveys, cruise visitor arrivals, and an online library of more than 1,000 documents.

The RTRC was developed with the kind support of the European Union through the Pacific Regional Tourism Capacity Building Programme (PRTCBP) and marks the introduction of a new service to SPTO members and targets to serve SPTO members with the delivery of timely and accurate tourism statistics, and market intelligence.

SPTO Tourist Arrivals Statistics for the Pacific ACP and SPTO Member Countries

The preparation of the following publications has been made possible through the Pacific Regional Tourism Capacity Building Programme funded by the 10th EDF of the European Union and implemented by the Pacific Tourism Organisation.

The Visitor Arrival (VA) Snapshots provide a summary of the inbound tourist flows to the Pacific region, including the tourist flows to each of the SPTOs Pacific Island member countries. The snapshots typically cover a set number of indicators which include:

  • Tourist VAs to Pacific Destinations (i.e. Where they are going in the Pacific?);
  • Tourist VAs by Pacific Source Markets (i.e. Where are they coming from?); and
  • Tourist VAs by Purpose of Visit (i.e. Why are they coming?).

Additionally, these indicators are analysed and compared to the data recorded in the same period of the previous year. However, in light of the pandemic: reporting indicators have been adjusted accordingly based on the data available.

As the mandated organisation representing Tourism in the region, the SPTO compiles the VA Snapshots primarily to monitor the tourist inflows to the Pacific and provide insights on these inflows on a quarterly/annual basis.

These insights are compiled and shared with SPTO member countries, and also with various stakeholders on a request basis.

The SPTO sources the VA data from each of its Pacific Island member countries, dealing primarily with the National Tourist Offices (NTOs) within these countries. Alternatively, the SPTO also sources data from the National Statistics Offices (NSOs).

The list of stakeholders requesting this data includes Development Partners, Academic Institutions, Embassies, Consultants, Donors, Media Agencies and the Tourism Industry in general.
