14 November 2017The tourism observatory met for the third time this year, Monday afternoon, under the presidency of the Minister of Tourism, Nicole Bouteau.
Important point of this meeting, the expected presentation of statistics by the Institute of Statistics of French Polynesia (ISPF) which showed a clear increase in the number of visitors to Polynesia, with + 3.3% increase on the first semester. The increase in attendance is found in tourist nights (+ 5%) and in hotel attendance (+ 6.4%). The third quarter estimates are also rising and the tourist threshold will exceed for the first time that reached at the end of 2008. These figures suggest good results for the whole of 2017, despite the bad weather at the beginning of the year, then the May and June strikes and the Paul Gauguin and Wind Spirit fairings during the first half of 2017.
This session was also an opportunity to present the impact study of the social movement of May and June on the tourism industry as well as the progress of regulatory reforms underway in underwater recreational diving, tourist transport and tourist accommodation whose texts will be examined very soon by the Assembly of French Polynesia.
An update on the structuring tourism development was made with a presentation of the progress of the project “The Tahitian Village” whose program was redefined with an allotment of the site allowing a progressive commercialization by functional unit, the realization of hotel programs and condominiums being prioritized.
The members of the Observatory were finally made aware of the possibility of proposing short-term feasible projects in very specific themes, inscribed within the framework of the Assises des Outre-Mer, whose workshops are conducted jointly by the State and the Country. The final objective is the drafting of a “French Overseas Blue Book” at the French level, which will serve as the main road map during the current five-year period.
Let’s not forget that the tourism observatory is the space for exchanges and consultation and the co-piloting tool for the French Polynesia’s tourism development strategy. Bringing together representatives of each emblematic sector of tourism and government representatives, its mission is to provide the monitoring and steering elements of the strategy and to enlighten operators on tourist information, the results of strategic studies. and the evolution of statistical indicators.
