On Thursday, September 26, Pacific Tourism Organisation (SPTO) Board Chairperson Adela Issachar Aru and CEO Chris Cocker were on a work mission in New Caledonia, where they were warmly received by President Louis Mapou.
The SPTO delegation visited New Caledonia to conduct an on the ground assessment to reconfirm New Caledonia hosting the November SPTO Board of Directors and Council of Tourism Ministers meetings. New Caledonia, a member of the SPTO Board since 2015.
During the visit, President Mapou updated the team on the ongoing crisis in New Caledonia since May, and discussions centered on how SPTO could support the country in reviving its tourism sector.
“We are committed to standing by New Caledonia during this challenging time, helping to shape a sustainable tourism strategy that benefits local communities and the region as a whole,” said Mr Cocker shared.
The delegation was joined by Julie Laronde, Director of New Caledonia Tourism, and Héa Katrawi, representing Mickaël Forrest, the government official responsible for international tourism promotion.
These discussions reaffirm SPTO’s commitment to advancing sustainable tourism across the Pacific and reflect the trust placed in New Caledonia’s vision to develop a comprehensive national tourism policy.
“Sustainable tourism holds immense potential for New Caledonia, offering opportunities for job creation, fostering inclusion, and strengthening local economies. It also plays a key role in preserving cultural and natural heritage, while promoting peaceful coexistence between communities,” added Mr Cocker.
The visit also coincided with the celebration of World Tourism Day in New Caledonia, marking a meaningful moment in SPTO’s ongoing efforts to support sustainable tourism initiatives throughout the Pacific.
