The Pacific Tourism Organisation (SPTO) in partnership with the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) convened a workshop on sustainable tourism product development on Wednesday 31st March at the Holiday Inn in Suva.
The workshop, which also engaged virtually with some participants, was aimed at achieving the following objectives:
- To support and advance the development of sustainable tourism products in the Pacific Islands.
- To encourage the exchange of good practices in sustainable tourism development between Pacific Islands and pioneer countries.
- To promote and disseminate the findings of the UNWTO/APTEC Publication on Sustainable Tourism Product Development Opportunities in the Pacific Islands
In his opening address SPTO Deputy Chairman and CEO of Tourism Solomons, Mr. Josefa Tuamoto, acknowledged the workshop as an important opportunity for dialogue on post-pandemic recovery focusing on sustainable tourism development.
“Governments, development partners and businesses are all challenged to step out of our comfort zones during these trying times, to reset and rethink, the type of tourism we want for our communities, countries and our region”, he said.
A UNWTO study on Sustainable Tourism Product Development Opportunities in the Pacific Islands was also touched on by Ms. Alcinda Trawen, Deputy Manager, Research and International Relations, UNWTO. To be launched in 2021, the study was undertaken in 2019 to identify practical, high priority steps (e.g. low cost vs. high return) that can be taken to further the Pacific’s sustainable tourism product offerings.
