Students Join Resort Clean Up Initiative

Coinciding with the national environment awareness month, a resort based in Rakiraki organised a clean-up initiative along its surrounding marine areas involving volunteers as young as primary school students.

Volivoli Beach Resort organised its Environment Day initiative on Saturday with over 70 volunteers clean up collecting rubbish in its surrounding mangroves and dive area.

According to the resort’s managing director Natalie Darling, the initiative involved 35 students from Naria Primary School.

“It was a very successful day,” she said.

With the theme of this year’s national environment awareness focussing around the theme: ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’, the resort has also emphasized on recycling.

This is something the resort “strongly believes in” which is embedded into its staff members.

Since it began in 1974, World Environment Day annually marked on June 5 has grown to become a global platform for public outreach. It is widely celebrated in over 100 countries.

In launching the national awareness initiatives last week, Environment Minister Parveen Kumar said this year’s World Environment Day theme: ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’ was a call for all of us to come together to combat one of the greatest environmental challenges of our time – plastic pollution.
