There is vibrancy and youthfulness about Timor-Leste. This is definitely part of its charm, which most who visit find very refreshing. Timorese in general are gregarious and they like to party. Usually that means joining together with family, friends and neighbours, sharing food and drink, music, dancing and sometimes fireworks. If passing by you are likely to be asked to join in. At the national level, in addition to important religious holidays such as – All Souls, All Saints, Christmas and Easter, most other public holidays celebrate Timor-Leste’s recent independence as a nation.

Diving in Timor Leste

Timor-Leste has some of the most pristine, ecologically diverse and least explored dive sites on the globe. The marine life is abundant, with colourful hard and soft corals as well as a vivid array of reef fish. Open water species such as tuna and mackerel are encountered along with harmless reef and whale sharks, manta rays, turtles and the more elusive dugongs. In more sheltered sites you’ll marvel at the variety of fascinating smaller critters – displaying weird and wonderful shapes and colours.

Dolphins and Whales, Fishing and Water Sports in Timor Leste

Viewing dolphins and whales in the wild is exhilarating and Timor-Leste is a top location for this. While dolphins and especially the smaller whales, such as short-finned pilot and melon-headed, can be seen year round, from October to December the Wetar Strait separating Dili and Atauro becomes a major migratory route (a marine super highway) between the Pacific and Indian Oceans. During this time different species of whales – including the blue, beaked, humpback, sperm, killer, short-finned pilot and melon-headed, along with very large pods of dolphins – can be viewed from cruise boats and the shoreline. Marine scientists refer to Timor-Leste as a global hotspot for whales and dolphins due to their abundance, diversity and sheer density of numbers. Some of the diving operators run dolphin & whale watching cruises on a charter basis during the migration season.

They include pristine tropical paradises along the northern coast such as the white sand beaches to the east near Baucau, on both sides of Com, at Valu and around exquisite Jaco Island, at the far eastern extremity of the country.

Hiking in Timor Leste

Timor-Leste is made for hiking, with stunning scenery, friendly locals and a network of tracks criss-crossing the entire country. From coastal walks to multi-day village and mountain hikes, Timor-Leste has some excellent options. Even close to Dili there is fantastic walking, including the ‘Horta Loop’ – a 2-3 hours circuit from Areia Branca Beach, with coastal views from the landmark Cristo Rei statue atop Cape Fatucama.

Eating and Drinking in Timor Leste

Timor-Leste has a strong culture of hospitality and most socialising involves food.
