Tourism Minister Nicole Bouteau received on Tuesday Benoit Rival, president of the Vélo Club de Tahiti and organizer of the Tahitian Round which was accompanied by Stéphanie Sanquer, secretary of the club, as well as Roger Despoir, treasurer.
They wished to thank the Ministry of Tourism and Tahiti Tourism for their support in organizing this cycling race, a sporting event that can not be ignored in the country’s event calendar. This meeting was an opportunity for the organizers to present the results of the 2017 edition of the Tahitian Ronde and the program for next year.
549 riders took part in the sixth edition which took place last May. Among them, 86 athletes coming from Polynesia and 7 other countries: England, France, Australia, Belgium, Chile, New Caledonia and New Zealand.
In terms of tourism, the organizers have been offering for the past four years a seven-day tourist package, allowing participants to discover the destination via the Tahitian Round. They combine sport and tourism. Promotion of the race and the destination is ensured through specialized media in the United Kingdom, New Zealand and France thanks in particular to the support of Tahiti Tourism.
Benoit Rival and his team are actively preparing the 2018 edition of which the number of foreign participants should be multiplied by four thanks to the partnership developed with the tour operator specialized in the organization of tourist stays destined for cycling enthusiasts, Santana Adventure. Indeed, the company has chartered the Wind Spirit for two cruises in pre and post event, allowing visitors to discover the Society’s islands. Meetings have already taken place between the organizers, the local authorities and their tourism committee to organize the reception of cruise passengers.
Nicole Bouteau congratulated and thanked the organizers of the Tahitian Round by telling them that this sporting event that helps promote the destination is part of the country’s tourism development strategy. They will again be able to count on the support of the Ministry of Tourism for the 2018 edition.
