The Bar Of 200,000 Annual Tourists Crossed

The Tahiti Institute of Statistics (ISPF) announced Monday an increase in tourist attendance of + 16.1% in February and + 7.2% in March 2018. For the first time since 2008, Polynesia has crossed the bar 200 000 tourists over one year during these two months.

It had been ten years since it had happened. In February and March 2018, French Polynesia surpassed 200,000 tourists over a full year. According to ISPF figures released on Monday, Polynesia welcomed 200,436 tourists between February 2017 and February 2018 and 201,780 tourists between March 2017 and February 2018. Note that this symbolic bar of 200,000 tourists was only crossed during eight years in French Polynesia. First between 1999 and 2002, then between 2003 and 2008. The historical maximum of 258 000 tourists was reached in 2001.

In detail over the last two months, the strong growth in the number of tourists (+ 16.1% in February and + 7% in March) is mainly driven by a marked influx of cruise passengers (+ 69% in February and + 68% in March).
