The Federated States of Micronesia: Pioneers in Sustainable Tourism and Regional Cooperation

The Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) is a nation of breathtaking natural beauty and rich cultural heritage, spread across 607 islands in the western Pacific. While tourism remains a relatively small sector in FSM, the country has made significant strides in sustainable tourism and development, positioning itself as a key advocate for responsible travel and environmental conservation.

FSM is home to 4% of the world’s coral reefs and boasts some of the best pelagic fisheries globally. Recognising the importance of preserving its marine ecosystems and cultural heritage, FSM has adopted a low-volume, high-yield approach to tourism development. This strategy prioritizes quality over quantity, ensuring that tourism growth does not compromise the environment or local traditions.

Key sustainable tourism initiatives include:

• Marine Conservation Efforts: FSM’s waters are renowned for their biodiversity, including pristine coral reefs and abundant marine life. The country actively promotes eco-friendly diving and snorkelling, particularly in Chuuk Lagoon, a world-famous wreck diving site.
• Community-Based Tourism: FSM encourages cultural tourism experiences that allow visitors to engage with local traditions, from Yap’s stone money to Pohnpei’s ancient Nan Madol ruins.
• Climate Action Leadership: FSM was the first Pacific Island country to sign the Glasgow Declaration on Climate Action in Tourism, reinforcing its commitment to reducing tourism-related carbon emissions.

As a member of the SPTO Sustainable Tourism Board Sub Committee, FSM plays a vital role in shaping regional tourism policies. The country has been a strong advocate for sustainability indicators and regional collaboration, ensuring that Pacific tourism aligns with global best practices.

• Pacific Leaders Sustainable Tourism Commitment: FSM was the first signatory of this SPTO-led initiative, demonstrating its leadership in sustainable tourism.
• Regional Solidarity: FSM actively supports the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent, emphasizing climate resilience and sustainable economic development.

FSM also champions gender equity in the tourism sector. In 2024, FSM was represented by Bermance Aldis as a panelist in the Pacific Women in Tourism Talanoa, highlighting FSM’s commitment to inclusive tourism policies and women’s leadership in the sector. The Talanoa serves as a platform for knowledge-sharing and policy development, ensuring that women’s contributions to tourism are recognized and supported.
