14 October 2025Migration Brings Hundreds of Giants Through Southeast Asia’s Pristine Marine Superhighway
DILI, TIMOR-LESTE – (October 8, 2025): A colossal migration is underway in the waters of Timor-Leste as the annual whale watching season begins, offering visitors front-row access to one of the planet’s most significant marine journeys. From October through December, the nation provides rare and intimate access to some of the planet’s most remarkable marine giants as they journey through the deep, nutrient-rich waters of the Ombai-Wetar Strait – one of Earth’s few deep-water migratory superhighways.
Positioned strategically in the renowned Coral Triangle, Timor-Leste plays host to over one-third of all known cetacean species. During the whale watching season, visitors may encounter Pygmy blue whales – one of the four subspecies of the largest animal on earth – as well as migrating pods of sperm whales, melon-headed whales, and short-finned pilot whales.
“Timor-Leste is globally recognised as one of the best whale-watching destinations,” said Antonio da Silva, Director General of Tourism at the Ministry of Tourism and Environment. “Whale watching in Timor-Leste is truly unique as it not only showcases our extraordinary marine biodiversity but also supports our local communities, conservation efforts and sustainable tourism development.”
Half-day and full-day whale watching tours can be booked from several licensed marine operators departing mainly from the capital Dili and the nearby Atauro Island. Tours are conducted with a strong emphasis on responsible and sustainable practices, ensuring minimal disturbance to the marine environment while offering visitors unforgettable experiences.
