Timor-Leste Makes Top 10 List Of Underrated Destinations To Visit In 2027

Dili, Timor-Leste: 14 September 2026 – Dili, Timor-Leste, has been named in Intrepid Travel’s annual Not Hot List, which recognises ten of the world’s most exciting under-the-radar destinations to watch in 2027. Developed by the world’s largest adventure travel company, the list highlights destinations that are ready to welcome more visitors, offer compelling new experiences and developments, and have strong potential for tourism to deliver positive benefits to local communities.

Following Timor-Leste’s recent admission to ASEAN, Intrepid’s 2027 Not Hot List positions its capital, Dili, as an emerging tourism destination, with new flights, upgraded infrastructure and community-led experiences making it easier to explore one of Southeast Asia’s least-visited destinations. To further support visitation and destination development, Intrepid’s 9-day Timor-Leste Expedition offers an immersive introduction to the country, combining time in Dili with adventures beyond the capital, including a hike to Timor-Leste’s highest peak, a visit to a local coffee plantation, time on Atauro Island and a homestay with a local family.

“Dili’s inclusion in Intrepid Travel’s 2027 Not Hot List is welcome recognition of Timor-Leste’s unique culture, natural beauty and warm hospitality. We are committed to responsible tourism that protects our heritage, benefits local communities and invites travellers to explore Timor-Leste with curiosity and respect.” – Antonio da Silva, Director General, Ministry of Tourism

“Tourism here is still young. We are not a destination where everything has been built or polished for tourists, and I think that is one of our biggest strengths. You need to come with an open mind and a heart for adventure – but that is also where some of the best experiences come from.” – Anas Madeira, Intrepid Travel Tour Leader, Timor-Leste.

Drawing on insights from Intrepid’s global network of local leaders and destination experts across more than 35 countries, the Not Hot List has built a reputation for identifying destinations on the rise before they enter the global spotlight. Other destinations featured on previous Not Hot Lists have experienced significant growth in visitor interest and traveller demand following their inclusion, creating employment opportunities, strengthening local supplier partnerships, and supporting continued investment in tourism infrastructure and experiences.
