For our February Newsbeat, we are happy to share with you some initiatives from the small island nation of Tuvalu, on their journey towards sustainable tourism development.
Learn about the Te Po Tefolaha and its importance for the people of Nanumea Atoll, as well as progress in improving domestic air services for Tuvalu. From the National Tourism Office, get updated on the development of Tuvalu’s Sustainable Tourism Policy Framework as they conclude the validation workshop for its tourism stakeholders. Lastly, we spotlight Afelita Island Resort – a Tuvaluan island resort that is actively engaging in agroforestry.

On the regional scale, we congratulate again, Vanuatu and Timor-Leste for their recent signing of the Pacific Leaders Statement of Commitment to Sustainable Tourism bringing the total number of countries that have signed so far to 6. We anticipate that the recent developments inspire interest from our member countries to join our collective efforts for a sustainable and responsible recovery.
In this issue, we also highlight the partnership between the Japan International Cooperation Agency and the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environmental Programme on the virtual training programme aimed at building the resilience of the tourism industry in the Pacific from the impacts of climate change. Your resource of the month is the recent publication on the IPCC Working Group II contribution to the Sixth Assessment Report highlighting the latest Climate Change Impacts, Adaptation and Vulnerability in today’s world.
