The new year has begun with strong momentum, and the Pacific’s sustainable tourism journey continues to grow through the dedicated efforts of National Tourism Organisations (NTOs) across the region, supported by the Pacific Tourism Organisation (SPTO). From the boost in tourism on Kiritimati Island, Kiribati, to the recovery plan underway in New Caledonia, the Pacific is showing no signs of slowing down in advancing tourism more sustainably. More on these stories in this edition of the Newsbeat.
For January, we spotlight Fiji, showcasing a range of exciting developments across the tourism sector. The Lau Tourism Project is opening new opportunities for outer island communities, while the annual Tourism Convention continues to serve as a dynamic hub for collaboration, dialogue and innovation. At the policy level, insights into the future of Fiji’s Sustainable Tourism Framework are shaping long‑term growth and resilience for the industry. Complementing these national initiatives, we also highlight the inspiring work of Barefoot Kuata Resort, whose efforts in marine conservation and rural education demonstrate how sustainability and community impact are being woven into Fiji’s tourism journey. We dive deeper into the details in this Newsbeat.
We also take a closer look at the Sustainable Tourism Enhancement in the Pacific (STEP) Project Regional Roadmap, exploring the country pathways of the four demonstration nations—Fiji, Kiribati, Samoa, and Vanuatu. With Phase II now underway, the project is entering an exciting stage of implementation with the first country engagement in Fiji in January. SPTO will continue to provide timely updates as progress unfolds across the region.
Stay tuned for the announcements in this issue, including the much‑anticipated South Pacific Tourism Exchange (SPTE), which will take place on 25–26 March 2026 in Nadi, Fiji. The event is preceded by the inaugural Industry Day which is an opportunity for networking, information sharing and collaboration.
This year is already shaping up to be a transformative chapter for Pacific tourism. The vision ahead is bold: Tourism should no longer be defined simply as “sustainable tourism,” but as an industry where sustainability is unapologetically embedded into every offering, every experience and every aspect of operations.
