Vanuatu Department Of Tourism Eyes Ownership Of ‘Skills For Tourism’

The Department of Tourism (DoT) has declared its commitment to ensuring the sustainability of the ‘Skills for Tourism’ program when it presented its Vt2 million contribution to the Vanuatu Skills Partnership.

Skills for Tourism is one of the successful sub-programs of the Australian Government-funded Vanuatu Skills Partnership, commonly known as TVET.

It is critical that the Vanuatu Government, through DoT, is able to sustain the operations of this program financially when the current funding from the Australian Government is gone.

The funding will support Vanuatu Skills Partnership, through the National Skills Development Fund, to continue to boost local tourism business development, carry out client coaching and build the professional development of tourism officers on all provinces where Skills Centres are located.

“This assistance is the first of its kind and will not be the last,” said the Acting Director of Tourism, Donald Pelam.

The Director of the Vanuatu Skills Partnership, Fremden Yanhambath, applauded DoT for recognising the importance of skills development and also, for being the first government department to have shown commitment to financial investment into the national Skills Development Fund.

Yanhmabath said the skills sector has an important role in the building the productivity of the informal sector.

“It is essential to skill local ni-Vanuatu businesses so they can create employment opportunities for other ni-Vanuatu in the productive sectors, thus leading to inclusive economic growth,” he said.

Vanuatu Skills Partnership through the Skills Centres has now developed new tools and approaches to link other productive sectors such as agriculture, construction and handicraft.

The Skills Centres, under the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET), coordinate integrated skills training and business development services in line with provincial economic development priorities.
