Vanuatu Statistics To Benefit From Production And Statistical Analysis Of Monitoring Indicators

Production and Statistical Analysis of Monitoring Indicators (PSAMI) in support of inclusive development policies is another knowledge co-creation program under Japan International Cooperation Agency and United Nations Statistical Institute for Asia and the Pacific.
The PSAMI program aims to strengthen the capability of agencies comprising the national statistical system in developing countries to produce disaggregated Sustainable Development Goal indicators and relevant social and economic statistics from household survey data that enable analysis of socio-economic disparities.
According to a JICA statement, this program was offered to middle-level government statisticians who currently and are expected to continue substantively in the design of household surveys, and production and analysis of official statistics and indicators from household surveys in support of socio-economic disparity analysis.
In her presentation, statistician Susie Mento who attended the training from May to July in Japan described the program to be at Vanuatu’s advantage as the software program was a relevant tool to use for data research and compilation at the Vanuatu National Statistics Office (VNSO).
“The program consisted of three phases, the preliminary, training and the action plan phase and we went through all the SDG, targets and indicators that lead to the main part of the workshop which was our project work that focuses on building our analytical and technical skills as statisticians,” she said.
“In the program we were introduced to an analysis tool which is the ‘R-Software package-, it was my first time to use and first time to be used in the program-it is handy especially for the work that i do here (VNSO).”

Ms Mento said that it was an informative training and good experience in learning from other countries on how they go about gathering and putting together accurate data and statistics.
“I really appreciate the opportunity though we faced challenges in the work load but a very good training and according to my action plan, i am willing to share what i have learnt to colleagues who are interested to help improve our work performance at NSO,” she said.
VNSO has acknowledged and congratulated Ms Mento on her training adding that she has added on her worth as a valuable officer at the Statistics Office.
The Training was funded by UN SIAP and JICA.
