Visitor Numbers Up For Fiji

THE Fiji Bureau of Statistics noted an increase in the number of visitors from countries such as Australia, New Zealand, US and Pacific Islands for last month.

Provisional numbers released by the bureau shows the visitor arrivals for last month totaled 65,151 which represented an increase of 4.3 per cent compared with last year.

While increases were noted for some of Fiji’s major tourist markets, visitor arrivals from countries such as China, Canada, UK, Japan and South Korea declined.

Visitors arriving for holiday purposes accounted for 75.5 per cent of total arrivals, 8.3 per cent came to visit their friends or relatives, 5.0 per cent came for business purposes while 11.2 per cent visited Fiji for other reasons.

Meanwhile January to November visitor arrivals for this year showed a 6.4 per cent increase over the corresponding period last year — up from 719,601 and 765,454.

Statistics also show that 66.3 per cent of the visitors to Fiji last month were in the age range of 25-64, which accounts for the vast majority of the working age population.

Children aged 14 and below accounted for 11.3 per cent of the November visitor arrivals, 13.5 per cent comprising youths aged 15-24 with the remaining 8.9 per cent comprising those in the retirement age group of 65 and over.
