Mr Homsy came into the country three weeks ago.
Prior to taking up the role as the Resort’s new general manager, he was the general manger for Baby­lon Warwick Hotel in Baghdad, Iraq.
He has been part of the hospitality industry for more than 28 years and has held the general manager posi­tion for various hotels and resorts in Europe for more than 20 years.
During his professional working life, he had worked for countries like France, Poland, Brussels, Bel­gium, Spain and Morocco, just to name a few.
However, this is the first time for him to work in the Pacific.
When asked to compare the work atmosphere in Fiji to countries he had previously worked in, he said: “Business models do not change. When you are in the hospitality in­dustry, you have basics and stand­ards.
“It is just the profile of the guests that changes although some coun­tries may have more challenegs than others in terms of employ­ment, hospitality skills and so on,” said Mr Homsy.
The business, reflexes, standards and procedures remains the same but will be amended a bit to suit the local environment, he added.
What do you love about your job?
“If you do not love the job and if you do not love the people then you cannot do it.
“You have to love the people, guests, details, quality and making people happy because these are the basics,” he said.
In the hospital industry, tangi­ble items are not sold but rather, dreams, sleep, happiness and the opportunity to relax.
Because of the nature of the in­dustry, Mr Homsy emphasised the importance of making people hap­py.
“This is the job where you will go to sleep and guests will wake up or you will be working while others are off.
“There are a lot of challenges and this is why you have to understand the criteria or requirements to do this job,” said Mr Homsy.
Those who want to join the frater­nity have to be active, understand­ing, must love the job, need to be extra detail oriented, proactive and must love teaching others.
The hospitality industry is like a theatre, he explained.
When you make a mistake, it is not like a movie where you can cut and start over again.
Working in this industry is like acting in a theatre.
You need to be very attentive to details, manners, behavior and groom, he said.
What are your plans as the new
general manager?
The property had gone through a new transformation in the previ­ous years.
With the resort’s new look and style, Mr Homsy says the property will continue to be upgraded to a better standard that will make the guests happy.
What is your source of inspiration?
“The Fijian culture because I have been around a lot of countries in my life and I have rarely seen such welcoming and accommodating people.
“In fact, sometimes they turn the guest’s attention from the property to themselves because they are ex­tremely happy.
“They love the guests and so we do not have the feeling that we are pressuring them as it is just a natu­ral thing for them to be happy,” he said.
In a staff general meeting, he told the staff, “I do not care about the stars of the hotel because what is more important is the staff.
“They are the asset and this is what makes a hotel excellent.”
