Recovery Plan is Priority for New Air Vanuatu CEO
12 January 2021You may know that blue carbon is the carbon that is captured and stored by coastal ecosystems, but how much do you actually know about it?
For instance did you know…
- There are three main types of blue carbon ecosystems: mangroves, seagrass, and salt marshes.
- Mangroves can store up to 10 times more carbon per acre than land-based forests.
- Blue carbon ecosystems act as natural barriers, defending coastal communities against the damaging impacts of climate change.
- It is estimated that every minute, up to three football fields of blue carbon ecosystems are being lost. In fact, half of the world’s seagrass has been lost since the 1990s.
- Human activities such as building hotels, clearing swimming areas, and growing crops are largely responsible for this loss.
- By offsetting your carbon footprint you can help protect these important habitats.
These are just a few fun facts – there’s so much more to discover! Read our latest blog post to learn more about our planet’s incredible blue carbon ecosystems and the benefits that they deliver.
