World Tourism Day 2024: Celebrating “Tourism and Peace”

As we celebrate World Tourism Day, I would like to highlight the crucial role of tourism in fostering peace and responsible tourism across the Pacific and beyond.

At SPTO, we are deeply committed to promoting responsible tourism as a vital pathway to long-term peace and prosperity. Through our new Strategic Plan 2025-2029, closely aligned to the 2050 Blue Pacific Strategy, we aim to integrate responsible practices across the region’s tourism sector, ensuring that our natural resources, cultural practices for future generations. I believe that by promoting responsible tourism, we not only protect the environment but also lay the foundation for peace, stability, and inclusivity in the Pacific.

Tourism plays an essential role in post-conflict rebuilding efforts. It provides opportunities for economic recovery, fosters cross-cultural understanding, and helps to heal communities through shared experiences and collaboration. We have witnessed how tourism can unite people, bridge divides, and contribute to the restoration of peace in regions that have faced adversity. It is a powerful tool for reconciliation and rebuilding lives.
